getting from the east bank to the west bank of New Orleans - the ferry and more memories!

Published on October 04, 2025

So when I peddled into New Orleans yesterday I had to cross the mighty Mississippi river -  fortunately I have native New Orleans local knowledge of how to get around from 44 years ago.   I used to have a girlfriend in Chalmette when I was in college at Louisiana Tech University.   I would drive like 5 -6 hours straight on Friday to see her on the weekends.   When I would go to Chalmette in my 65 mustang ("Sally")  to take her out I needed to leave her house by 9:45 pm to catch the last ferry across the river to avoid a long drive back through the city to get to the west bank where I stayed at my parents when I was in from college.  I always got that "bothered look" when I had to leave as though she really thought I wanted to leave (yeah right!!!! - I would have much rather stayed kissing her despite the blinking carport light hint I got from her mother it was time to leave!) but I was so exhausted from the drive in!   Sometimes in life you are in a "no win" situation and you just gotta go with it.   Fortunately she still loved me for other "unknown" reasons so I was still the "lucky one"!
