So I have kind of settled on 75 - 80 miles a day as the right amount to peddle each day. Very challenging and realistic at age 64 given the moderate hills and the weight of my duffel bag on the back of my bike. When I planned the trip I was a little bit overly optimistic about the mileage I could accomplish each day. On my ride across America when I was 27 I peddled every single one of the 5760 miles that summer and it was somethiong I was very proud of. I want to enjoy the Tour de five guys and that means managing the time I spend on the bike each day. So I am going to get a ride out of the town I am leaving and into the town I am going too! This allows me to avoid the traffic each day and stay on my target of 75 - 80 miles. So on my ride into Augusta yesterday after having to wait a little longer than normal for my ride request to be picked up (it is all based on supply and demand) Alexis picked me up and drove me and my bike to the Hyatt Place in Augusta. Sometimes the person does not say a lot and it is just a job! Nothing wrong with that but it is nice if the prerson wants to visit a little during the ride. I offered to explain to Alexis why I was doing the Tour de five guys and she was amazed! Alexis is a 32 year old mother of 5 (soon to be 6) who works for John Deere and just drives a couple hours a day to bring in some additional income for her family. She has a lot on her plate these days but her attitude about life with her husband and kids was inspiring to me. She seems to always look on the bright side of things and is very committed and hardworking in all aspects of her life. A joy for me to see that attitude in the younger generation! Alexis I will be carrying you and your family in my prayers the rest of my journey! Thanks for sharing with me!
